Monro Playground in Opawa / Hillsborough, Christchurch

Monro Playground on the corner of Opawa Rd and Garlands Rd and I only found two entries on Papers Past under this name. The Erie Monro Playground was officially opened in December 1935. In 1934 the building of the memorial arched gates and wing walls were completed and it was decided to erect a stone wall around the park. In 1936 four new seats were installed in Erie Monro Playground including one donated by Captain H Monro.

Thomas Hugh Erie Monro was manager of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company and he resided on Aynsley Terrace in Opawa. He was the only son of Captain H Monro chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Erie Monro drowned at Waikuku aged 34. He was on a family camping trip and had been bathing with his brother-in-law. The inquest said that neither man could swim. Erie was named after Lake Erie, Canada. He had a son who was also called Erie and he definitely learnt to swim as his name was mentioned in a couple of articles about swimming competitions.
