The suburb of Hillsborough and yes I know that I haven’t finished researching and writing up Garlands Road. I have now walked all the streets in Hillsborough. The Wikipedia entry for Hillsborough didn’t give much information and waffled on about Edward Garland. I looked at Papers Past and Ancestry website and I soon ignored Edward Garland. In 1961 there were several ads for the sale of sections in the new township of Hillsborough. The new township is near the south bank of the Heathcote River and close to Hills Road ( became Port Hills Road ). The name Hillsborough was because it was near the hills. Edward Garland’s brother Joseph had a farm in the area and it was called Heathcote Farm. Ignore the obituary for his widow which claimed the farm was called Hillsborough Farm as it was Heathcote Farm. Joseph drowned crossing the Rakaia River aged 47. There were three inquests before they decided that it was an accidental death. In 1860 Joseph sold off the land that created the township to settle debts. This meant that he avoided having to declare bankruptcy.
Good stuff. There’s a lot of misinformation out there. Do you Comment to Wikipedia? Stuart.
