Olson Way in Wigram – Named after Edward “Ted” George Olson (1906-1945). Air Commodore Olson was Wigram base commander January 1938-April 1938. Named to continue the theme in the Wigram Skies subdivision of naming streets after people involved in the air force in New Zealand. There are a number of streets named after former RNZAF Wigram Base commanders. Named in 2013
A small amount of information from the library website. Note the library has the spelling of Olson which is the correct spelling of this man’s surname. The valuation websites including QV has it spelt Olsen plus maps and sign posts have the Olsen spelling. How can you name a street after a person and then spell their name incorrectly. At least New Plymouth who also named a street after him managed to spell it correctly.
There were a lot of entries on Papers Past for this man and there was an obituary as well. He received the DSO award in 1943. A couple of entries at the beginning of 1945 about him being stationed in London. Several entries in March 1945 about him returning home because of ill health. He died in May 1945 at New Plymouth aged 39 leaving a wife and young daughter.
There are only three houses here on one side of the street. Tautoru Park is on the other side of the street and I was possibly geocaching in the park. Looked like a pleasant street but nothing inspired me to take photos.
