Churchill Street in the Central City, Christchurch

Churchill Street – Named after the Most Rev. Churchill Julius (1847-1938). Churchill Julius was the second Bishop of Christchurch 1890-1925 and Archbishop of New Zealand 1922-1925. First appears in street directories in 1898. In 1900 the Church Trustees applied to the Council asking it to take over Churchill Street and declare it a public street. It was not recognised as a public street by the Christchurch City Council until 1960.

Interesting information from the library website and I didn’t expect this information about the naming of the street. I assumed that it would have been named after Winston Churchill. This street is at the back of the Barbadoes St Cemetery and going by the library information it was probably originally church land. Several ugly modern houses here but I just had to take photos of the most gorgeous old house. There are still empty sections where houses were demolished and one still had a letterbox.
